successfully. The next one will follow the September meeting – all new members
are welcome to attend. New member packets are available – if you haven’t
received one yet, please see Ellie. Ellie will be putting out a call soon for
new pieces of literature from your business for the new member packets. Please,
long time members, mentor and welcome the new members to help them get involved
with our chamber.
Professional Development
There is a member survey to see what topics the chamber would be
interested in for an upcoming professional development seminar series. Marlene
has approached the Executive Committee about sponsoring a series of seminars.
There is a cost involved, so please take a few minutes to fill out the survey.
Advertising & Marketing
Wednesday of last week, the telephone book went to print! It
looks very nice and professional. 86 pages of advertisements. We are now
discussing how often the phone book should come out – if you have any input, see
Tim or Keir.
Business Fair
$2700 profit! $159 went directly to MAYAA. The $50 gift
certificate was used to purchase a nice first aid kit for MAYAA. Next year, we
are talking about April 29 for the business fair in 2006. Once that date is
contracted, it will be time to start working towards next year. If you are
interested in helping, see Archie.
Thank you so much to all volunteers who helped set up, clean up, provide
security, and all other various activities.
Special thanks to Howard and Ken for providing over night
security – Archie presented them with plaques inscribed with the following:
"Presented to "Ken Matthews (Howard LeRoux) for security service to the GMACofC
Business Fair May 6&7, 2005. You represent volunteerism at its finest. Our
sincere thanks. The Greater Mt Airy Chamber of Commerce."
Insurance
Move to pay $113 for liability insurance to Erie insurance.
Archie moved, Howard seconded. Motion carries.
Tim has asked Dave to give a proposal for Directors and Officers
insurance to protect the organization. Also, a proposal for a treasurers bond to
protect the chamber from embezzlement. There will be a recommendation at the
next meeting.
Finance Committee
It is being proposed to form a finance committee. The job of the
finance committee would be to entertain proposals for spending money, budgeting,
and track expenditures. Denny will serve as chair of the committee. If you are
interested, see Tim or Denny.
At the next Executive committee meeting, we will work on coming
up with a Community Investment policy.
Community Banner Program
Maryland Municipal League signed a contract with a company out
of Rochester, CGI, to go to towns around the state to create a town website. CGI
has approached Mt Airy about creating a website with pictures, information about
town officials, and streaming video. This project is funded by banners that will
line Main Street. Businesses sponsor the banners, and in return, the banner will
have the business name on the sponsored banner. Tim is proposing that the
Chamber sponsor one of the banners. The cost is $427. In return for this banner
sponsorship, it will be visible that the Chamber supports the town, as a chamber
we get a link to the streaming video on our own website. Ken Matthews moved,
Audrey Stapf seconded.
Discussion: Carol Blackburn brought up that CGI is not a local
business. Bob Cage agreed that the town should have come to a local business.
Some of the members feel that the town should not have made this decision
without discussing with the council. Archie Rogers brought up that this was
started at the state level.
Bob Cage discussed that we should go ahead and do this, but
accompanied by a strongly worded letter to the town that our stance is to
support the community, but we feel that it should have been a local company.
Tim Slane asked if the decision needs to be made today. Tim
Barkley responded that yes, it does.
There will be 50 banners around town, and there are only about
10 left. Our location will be in front of Ben Gue’s store. Carol Blackburn asked
if CGI approached Allegheny Power for permission – the answer to that is not
known. Tom Neff brought up that the $427 is for a 1 year contract. CGI has
contracted with the town for 3 years, so we have the option to continue or not
next year.
Archie called for question.
Motion passed. Objections were based on lack of community
involvement and the fact that CGI is not from the local area.
South Caroll High School
Bonnie McElroy - asking for individual contributions. She is
putting together Agenda books to help students with organization, to be printed
by Premier Printing. Bonnie is looking to raise between $5000 and $6000. If you
are interested in making a donation, please contact Bonnie Mackeroy.
Thank you to 9 members who agreed to come work with students on
interviewing skills. Tom Neff was pictured on the front of Carroll County Times.
Mr Phillips, their principal, also would like to extend his thanks.

New Business:
Trash Pick Up
Carol Blackburn – the town council is going to vote on
eliminating trash pick up for all businesses in Mount Airy on June 13th.
This affects downtown businesses. Carol moves that the Chamber testify before
the town council in support of the businesses, and continue picking up business
trash. Motion seconded by Jim Jones.
Discussion: Not all businesses trash is being picked up right
now, and Tim Slane brought up an amendment – the town should pick up ALL
business trash. The chamber does not object to an increase in taxes, but the
town as a whole has more negotiating power with the trash companies, rather than
the individual businesses.
Clarify: The chamber will write a letter to the Town Council
recommending that the town pick up all business trash, understanding that an
increased cost to the businesses may be passed on.
Motion passed.
DBA – Second Saturday Stroll – there will be a side walk sale
the 2nd Sat in July – if you are interested in having your business
participate, contact Carol Cahall or Ben Gue.
